Protect Your HVAC Unit From Late Winter Storms
In the Chicagoland Area, late winter storms are a way of life. From mid-February to early April, it’s not unusual to for us to get walloped with wet, heavy snow when we just want to think spring!
Because this time of year is such a mixed bag of weather, it’s important to protect your HVAC system from late winter storms. Here are some tips to keep you prepared no matter what Mother Nature brings!
Perform A Visual Inspection
Before the storm hits, inspect your property for any loose tree limbs or leaky gutters that can fall and damage any outside equipment when heavy with wet snow. Quick snowstorms with fast warm-ups make things like aluminum gutters and tree limbs weaker and prone to breaking.
Clear Snow Build Up From Outdoor Units
Heavy snow or ice build up can cause severe damage to outdoor HVAC units causing expensive repair and replacement costs. Be sure all units are off when you remove the snow and ice, and never use a sharp object when doing so.
Change Out Air Filters
Are you changing out your air filters at least every three months? Bad weather advisories are a perfect reminder to check on your filters to make sure they are clean and installed properly. Your HVAC unit is working extra hard to transfer heat throughout your home and having clean filters will mean less work for your furnace and increased airflow.
Have Your Annual Maintenance Performed
While it might be late in the season, it is never too late to schedule your annual maintenance! Any potential issues can be identified and repaired before they become too costly.
